Apple’s iPhone enterprise strategy: constant improvement

arstechnica.com.  Apple has upped the ante for iPhone enterprise use with the iPhone OS 3.0 update. In addition to a number of enterprise-friendly improvements added to the iPhone, Apple has also updated its iPhone Configuration Utility and published a handy guide for enterprise iPhone deployment.

It’s no secret that Apple doesn’t have a particularly ambitious enterprise program. For the most part, Apple is content with making killer hardware that people want to use, and typically users evangelize for (or in the case of C-level executives, demand) the ability to use iPhones with the company network. But that doesn’t mean Apple isn’t willing and able to continue to improve on the tools to make that happen as smoothly as possible.

iPhone OS 2.0 made the iPhone more “corporate-friendly” with the addition of Microsoft Exchange support, as well as remote wiping of a lost or stolen iPhone to prevent data theft. iPhone OS 3.0 goes even further, adding LDAP support for contacts, wireless CalDAV syncing, improved VPN support, improved Exchange support for meeting invites, encrypted backups, a variety of security and authentication protocols, additional device restrictions that include disabling the camera (a common security requirement, especially in government), and additional management capabilities with the new 2.0 version (Windows and Mac) of iPhone Configuration Utility.

Apple has also produced an 83-page how-to, titled iPhone OS Enterprise Deployment Guide, detailing configuring, activating and deploying the phones in an enterprise environment. It also includes an overview of the process of setting up provisioning profiles to distribute in-house developed apps. Further, Apple documents its mobile configuration file format so that admins can create or integrate with their own tools to manage the devices.

Though BlackBerrys and Windows Mobile devices still dominate the corporate mobile device space, the iPhone’s ease of use, thoughtful design, and—let’s face it—tech cachet have helped it gain inroads into the enterprise. As long as Apple continues to improve and enhance its enterprise-friendly features, it could easily be a contender in this space.

Flash on Android could be a killer solution

Software provider BSquare said it will port Adobe Flash technology onto Google Android for a tier 1 carrier. The specific carrier was not named, but if successful that would give Android a massive advantage over the Apple iPhone, which doesn’t support Flash.

I had been long waiting for iPhone’s support to Flash, but the Flash on Android came first. Even though Flash is not as powerful as Java, but it still can be a great development tool for Android developers.
